Stewardship is an increasingly important topic in the nation's leading business schools, as has been documented by organizations like The Aspen Institute.

This is a consequence of several trends. For example, people are increasingly preparing for life as a portfolio of experiences rather than for a single vocational calling throughout their working years.

People are also seeking to shape their lives for the pursuit of significance as well as success.

Furthermore, knowledge assets are replacing monetary assets as the driving form of capital. Because those assets are often held by individuals, it is implied that individuals and companies must work together in new ways to maximize the benefit for both parties, with a renewed emphasis on the individual's value-creation capacity.

These trends have prompted an approach to "life stewardship planning," which is designed to enhance a person's ability to create, capitalize, and capture value as an individual, for his or her own benefit, for the benefit of the organizations with which they affiliate, and for the benefit of the communities and environment in which they live.
